Paddle Steamers & the Working River: A History Day
Trace the riverboat era from Morgan's wharf to Renmark's PS Industry
The plan
The Murray once carried the economy of half a continent on its back. Wool, wheat and supplies moved by paddle steamer, and towns like Morgan boomed where the river met the railway. This day connects the surviving threads of that vanished world.
Start upriver and work your way through the heritage, finishing with a steamer that still fires her boiler.
Morning: Morgan, the great inland port
Begin at Morgan, once the second-busiest port in South Australia. Walk the restored wharf, read the flood markers, and visit the Morgan Museum in the old railway buildings to understand how completely the river ran the show. If the PS Mayflower is in steam, take the short heritage cruise.
Midday: the locks that tamed the river
Drive to Blanchetown and Lock 1, the first lock built on the Murray. From the viewing areas watch boats cycle through and native fish climb the fishway — the engineering that turned a wild river into a navigable, irrigable one.
Afternoon: Renmark and the PS Industry
Finish at Renmark, home of the PS Industry, a beautifully preserved paddle steamer maintained in working order. Tour the boat, then walk the Renmark riverfront where the steamer trade once unloaded. Cap the day with a drink at the historic Renmark Hotel overlooking the water.
