A riverbend at the heart of the Riverland
Named from the Aboriginal word "bery bery", meaning a wide bend in the river, Berri sits at the commercial heart of the Riverland on the north bank of the Murray, around 240 kilometres and roughly three hours' drive from Adelaide. Proclaimed a town in 1911 after irrigation opened the surrounding mallee to orchards and vineyards, it grew into citrus, fruit and juice country, and the fruit-themed Big Orange remains a well-known roadside landmark on the edge of town. Its riverfront of boardwalks, lawns and shady picnic spots makes one of the prettiest stretches on this part of the river.

Climb the Berri Lookout Tower, a converted water tower of about 16 metres, for sweeping views over the township and the Murray, especially at sunset.
