Ngak Indau Wetland Trail

An easy floodplain loop with a purpose-built bird hide

A gentle 2.6 km walk through restored wetlands in the Katarapko section of Murray River National Park, with a bird hide overlooking herons, egrets, ibis and cormorants.

Ngak Indau is the Riverland's gentlest introduction to floodplain ecology: a 2.6-kilometre loop through black box and river red gum country in the Katarapko section of Murray River National Park, about 40 easy minutes from start to finish. The centrepiece is a purpose-built bird hide positioned over the wetland, where herons, egrets, ibis, cormorants and a long supporting cast go about their business at close range.

The wetland is part of an active restoration story — environmental watering and native fish rehabilitation are slowly rebuilding the cycles the river once managed on its own, and interpretive signs along the trail explain what is being repaired and why.

It is flat, free and family-friendly, and connects with the Kai Kai Nature Trail if you want to stretch the morning. Paddlers can get a different angle on the same country along the Katarapko Creek canoe trail nearby.
