Free Ferries & River Towns of the Riverland
A two-day loop linking the free cable ferries that still stitch the river together
The plan
South Australia keeps its Murray River ferries free, and crossing them never gets old — wind down the window, feel the cable tug at the deck and watch the far bank slide closer. This loop strings four of them together with the river towns they serve.
Start upstream and work your way down, mixing ferry crossings with riverfront lawns, old wharves and a museum or two. There's no need to rush; the ferries set the pace, and half the pleasure is the waiting.
Break the trip overnight at Waikerie or Morgan, both of which sit on handsome reaches of the river with good places to stay and eat.
