Waikerie Ferry
A free cable ferry across the Murray at Waikerie
Like its cousins at Cadell, Morgan and Walker Flat, the Waikerie ferry is one of the Riverland's working cable ferries — a free, 24-hour crossing that has shuttled cars, locals and the curious across the Murray for generations.
The crossing takes only a couple of minutes, the ferry hauling itself across on submerged cables while the river slides past beneath. It's a small ritual of river life: wind down the window, watch the far bank approach and feel the current tug at the deck.
For visitors it's both a practical link to the orchards and tracks on the far side and a quietly memorable experience in its own right. There's no ticket, no timetable to speak of — just turn up and wait for the ramp to drop.
