A Family River Day on the Murray

Ferries, paddle boats, big things and a swim by the riverfront

1 day Families with kids 4 stops

The plan

The Riverland is built for an easy family day: free cable ferries the kids will want to ride twice, paddle boats, Big Things and shady riverfront lawns made for swimming and picnicking. Pack togs, a picnic and a sense of humour.

Morning: ferries and big things

Kids love the free cable ferries, so build the day around one or two crossings — Walker Flat beneath the cliffs is a winner. Detour to a roadside icon: the Big Orange at Berri is an easy, silly photo stop.

Midday: a paddle boat and a picnic

Board a paddle boat for a gentle cruise — Captain Proud on the lower river runs lunch and sightseeing trips with the cliffs as a backdrop. Then spread the picnic on a grassy riverfront; Waikerie's is among the prettiest, with the cliffs opposite and houseboats drifting past.

Afternoon: swim, play, ice cream

Finish where the kids can burn off energy — a swim and a play at a riverfront like Berri or Loxton, with the Tree of Knowledge's flood markers a sneaky bit of history, and an ice cream to seal the day.
