Walker Flat Ferry & Cliffs
A free 24-hour cable ferry beneath some of the most photographed limestone cliffs on the Murray.
At Walker Flat the river swings hard against a wall of pale limestone, and a little cable ferry shuttles cars across the channel beneath it free of charge, around the clock. The cliffs glow gold in late light and are a favourite of landscape photographers and houseboaters alike.
The ferry itself is a quietly enjoyable South Australian ritual — drive on, cross, drive off, no fuss. Below the cliffs the water is deep and slow, popular with anglers chasing callop and catfish.
There's a small community and a shop, but the draw here is simple: big cliffs, big river, and the gentle clank of the ferry cable doing its century-old job.
