Morgan Ferry

A free cable ferry at the old river port of Morgan

Morgan was once the busiest river port in South Australia, where paddle steamers met the railway and tonnes of wool and goods changed hands. The free cable ferry still crossing the Murray here is a living thread back to that river-trading past.

The ferry runs around the clock at no charge, hauling itself across the channel on submerged cables. From the deck you look out at the great cliffs and the long wharf that recall Morgan's heyday, before drought and changing trade left it a quiet country town.

It connects the town to Morgan Conservation Park and the back roads beyond, making it both a practical crossing and a small piece of theatre. Children love it; so do photographers chasing the cliffs in good light.
