Big Bend Lookout
A clifftop vantage over the longest stretch of unbroken river cliffs in the southern hemisphere.
Big Bend is exactly that — a long sweeping curve of the Murray hemmed by the tallest, longest run of river cliffs in the southern hemisphere. From the lookout near Nildottie the scale of the place finally lands: golden walls dropping straight into deep green water, with red gums fringing the far bank.
It's best at dawn and at dusk, when the low sun sets the cliffs alight. The same cliffs are a maternity roost for thousands of bats, and at night the colony pours out across the river in a spectacle the cruise operators time their trips around.
Bring a camera and patience. There is no fee, no fence-line of buildings — just the river doing what it has done for a very long time.
