Gluepot Reserve

An internationally significant mallee bird reserve north of the river, run by BirdLife Australia.

Gluepot is serious birding country. Sprawling across mallee and spinifex north of Waikerie, this BirdLife Australia reserve protects one of the largest intact tracts of old-growth mallee left in the country and shelters an extraordinary roll-call of threatened species.

This is where the dedicated come for malleefowl, black-eared miners, scarlet-chested parrots and red-lored whistlers — birds that have vanished from much of the cleared mallee elsewhere. Self-registration, bush camping, marked tracks and hides make it accessible to anyone prepared for a remote, unserviced experience.

Come equipped and self-sufficient: there's no shop, no fuel and no phone signal to rely on. What there is, in spades, is silence, stars and birds.
