Waikerie's twin clifftop silos carry a giant mural by artists Jimmy DVate and Garry Duncan — regent parrots, a yabby and river scenes on the theme "Healthy River, Healthy Community", painted on both sides so it faces town and river alike.
Waikerie's grain silos always dominated the town's skyline; now they carry its story. Painted by artists Jimmy DVate and Garry Duncan on the theme Healthy River, Healthy Community, the twin silos took around 16 weeks and nearly 500 litres of paint — and unusually, the murals wrap both sides, so the artwork faces the town's main street and the Murray at the same time.
The imagery is pure Riverland: the endangered regent parrot that nests in the district's river red gums, a giant yabby, the rain moth whose emergence locals read as a weather omen, and luminous river scenes that change character with the light. DVate's photo-real wildlife, familiar from silos across Australia, is at its best here at full clifftop scale.
Viewing is free, any time. Walk it into a loop with the Waikerie clifftop walk and the Waikerie riverfront below, and you have the town's whole geography — cliffs, river, fruit blocks and art — in a single easy morning.
