The Riverland's River Towns: A Local's Map

Renmark, Berri, Loxton, Barmera and beyond - what makes each river town tick.

By Discover the Riverland · 10 June 2026 · 6 min read

The Riverland is really a string of distinct river towns. Knowing the character of each helps you plan a smarter trip.

A string of towns on a bend

The Riverland isn't a single place so much as a chain of river towns, each with its own personality, strung along the Murray's great curves. Knowing them helps you plan.

Renmark and Paringa

The upper-river hub, Renmark has the polished riverfront, the grand community-owned hotel and the closest access to the dramatic Murtho cliffs and Chowilla floodplain. Twin town Paringa, just across the bridge, is houseboat-hire country.

Berri and Loxton

Berri is the commercial heart, with a smart riverfront precinct and wetland trails. Loxton, set on a horseshoe bend, leans into heritage with its excellent historical village and a strong agricultural identity - citrus, almonds and vines.

Barmera, Waikerie and the downstream towns

Barmera sits beside the vast Lake Bonney, a hub for water sports and the Loch Luna wetlands. Waikerie and Morgan, further downstream, are quieter, framed by towering limestone cliffs and rich in paddle-steamer history. Pick the towns that match your trip - wine, wetlands, heritage or houseboats - and build outward from there.
