There is a particular kind of quiet that only comes on a houseboat. You wake to mist lifting off the water, a chorus of corellas in the river red gums, and the gentle realisation that today’s only decision is which bend of the Murray to moor against next.
Houseboating is the Riverland’s signature holiday, and it’s easier than you think. From bases at Renmark, Berri and Paringa, operators hire out everything from snug two-berth boats to multi-storey floating villas with spas, rooftop decks and full kitchens. Best of all, you don’t need a licence - a briefing before you cast off is all it takes, and the river runs slow and forgiving.
Drifting at your own pace
The joy is in the aimlessness. Spend a morning fishing for callop and Murray cod off the back deck. Nose into a quiet anabranch and launch the kayaks. Pull up against a sandbar for a swim, or moor beneath a towering gum and simply watch the pelicans work the shallows. As evening falls you fire up the barbecue, and the only sound is water against the hull and the occasional splash of a fish rising.
Making the most of it
Plan loosely. The stretch above Renmark toward the Wilkadene woolshed brewery and the Headings cliffs is gloriously scenic, while downstream from Berri the Katarapko creeks reward slow exploration. Stock up before you leave - there are long stretches with no shops - and keep an eye on river levels and lock schedules.
A few days on a houseboat resets something. The river sets the pace, and you simply follow.
