Lock 3 Overland Corner
Boats, big lawns and river history at Overland Corner
A working Murray lock near Overland Corner with a broad grassed viewing area — picnic on the bank and watch houseboats step through the chamber.
Lock 3 sits on a sweeping bend near Overland Corner, where the Murray turns south-west on its long run toward Morgan. Built as part of the early twentieth-century program that converted an unreliable river into a dependable one, it still does its quiet daily work — holding the upstream pool for the irrigators, houseboats and wetlands of the central Riverland.
It is also one of the friendliest locks on the river to visit. A big, beautiful grassed area overlooks the chamber, made for picnics that pause whenever a vessel arrives and the gates begin to move. Watching a houseboat sink slowly out of sight — or rise, dripping, into view — is the Riverland's most reliable free entertainment.
The setting deepens everything around it: the Overland Corner Hotel, pouring drinks since 1859, is ten minutes away, and the Overland Corner wetlands and Herons Bend reach reward a slow drive back. Make it a half-day with our free things to do in the Riverland.

Yes — a big grassed area overlooks the chamber, so you can picnic while houseboats and cruisers lock through. It is free and open to visitors year-round.
Why are there locks on the Murray?
A program of locks and weirs built along the river in the early twentieth century guaranteed navigable water levels for river transport and irrigation. Lock 3, near Overland Corner, is one of the chain that keeps the Riverland's pool steady today.
