Maize Island Lagoon Conservation Park
An island and lagoon reserve on the Murray at Waikerie
Right on the doorstep of Waikerie, Maize Island Lagoon Conservation Park protects an island in the Murray and the lagoon system that surrounds it — a compact but rich slice of floodplain wildlife close to town.
The sheltered backwaters and lagoons draw pelicans, darters, cormorants and a shifting cast of waterfowl, while the red gums of the island and banks carry woodland birds. The quiet channels are well suited to a gentle paddle, giving the closest views of the birdlife.
Because it sits so close to Waikerie, it's one of the easiest places in the region to sample the magic of the Murray's wetlands without a long drive. Early morning is the time to come, when the water is glassy and the birds are busiest.
