Lake Bonney Foreshore Barmera

Swimming and watersports on a freshwater inland lake

Lake Bonney is the Riverland's great inland playground — a broad, shallow freshwater lake fed from the Murray, fringed by Barmera on its eastern shore. The foreshore is where the town meets the water, and in summer it's the place to be.

The calm, open water suits swimming, sailing, kayaking and waterskiing, and the lake's history as a speed-record venue lingers in local memory — Donald Campbell famously brought Bluebird here. Today it's gentler: families on the sand, dinghies tacking across the bay and pelicans riding the chop.

Grassy reserves, shade and picnic facilities line the shore, and the wide western horizon makes for memorable sunsets over the water.
