Almondco Loxton Orchards

The almond country around Loxton, where spring blossom turns whole districts white.

The Riverland grows a huge share of Australia's almonds, and the orchards around Loxton and the wider district are where you see it on the grandest scale. In late winter and early spring the trees erupt into a sea of white-and-pink blossom, one of the region's quiet seasonal spectacles, before the long summer ripens the nuts.

Almondco, the grower-owned co-operative, processes much of the harvest, and almonds sit alongside citrus and grapes as a pillar of the local economy. Driving the orchard roads at blossom time, with rows of trees stretching to the horizon, is a reminder of just how productive this irrigated country has become.
