The floodplain wetlands of the Riverland are its quiet treasures, and New Residence, on the Murray near Loxton, is a fine example of one being actively managed back to health. Regulated watering brings the wetland to life and draws birds in numbers.
When the basins hold water, waterfowl, darters, cormorants and spoonbills gather, and the fringing reeds shelter smaller, more secretive species for patient watchers. Red gum and black box woodland around the margins add a second layer of birdlife.
It's a low-key spot, more loved by local birdwatchers than tour buses, which is exactly its charm. Bring binoculars, come early, and let the wetland's slow rhythms reveal what's there.
