Bookpurnong Cliffs

Ochre river cliffs above the Murray near Loxton

Downstream of Loxton, the Murray swings against a run of limestone cliffs that glow in bands of ochre, cream and rust. The Bookpurnong reach is one of the lesser-known cliff faces of the Riverland, away from the busier lookouts upstream, and all the better for it.

The cliffs are best appreciated from the water or from the opposite bank, where the late-afternoon sun sets them alight. Look for rainbow bee-eaters and white-browed woodswallows working the airspace, and the burrows of bank-nesting birds pocking the soft stone.

This is country that rewards a slow houseboat drift or a paddle. There's no developed lookout here, so come prepared and respect the soft, crumbling cliff edges — they undercut without warning.
