Moorook Game Reserve

A patchwork of lagoons and red gum on the Murray floodplain

Between Loxton and Kingston-on-Murray, the Moorook Game Reserve protects a generous slice of Murray floodplain — a mosaic of permanent lagoons, seasonal backwaters and river red gum forest that fills with birdlife.

When the wetlands hold water, the reserve comes alive with waterfowl, darters, cormorants and pelicans, and the fringing reeds shelter crakes and rails for patient watchers. The red gums host an entirely different cast of woodland birds, from pardalotes to honeyeaters.

Quiet tracks and informal launch points make it good for low-key paddling and walking. It sees far fewer visitors than the headline reserves of the region, which is part of its appeal for anyone chasing solitude and birds.
