Pooginook Conservation Park
Mallee scrub and woodland north of Waikerie
Away from the river, the Riverland gives way to mallee — and Pooginook Conservation Park, north of Waikerie, protects a fine stand of it. This is the dry, sandy country that frames the irrigated river lands, and it has a stark beauty all its own.
Mallee eucalypts, native pine and saltbush cover the reserve, sheltering western grey kangaroos, echidnas and reptiles, while the canopy carries honeyeaters, woodswallows and, for the lucky, mallee specialists. Early morning and dusk are the times to come, when the animals stir and the light is kind.
The park sees few visitors and offers no facilities, so it suits self-sufficient walkers who want silence, big skies and the particular smell of warm mallee.
