Qualco Citrus Country

Orchard country on the Waikerie river flats

The Riverland grows a huge share of Australia's citrus, and the orchards around Qualco, near Waikerie, are the heartland of it. A drive through this country is a drive through the working Riverland — ranks of orange, mandarin and lemon trees, packing sheds, and the channels that carry Murray water to every row.

In winter the trees hang heavy with fruit and the air carries the sharp scent of citrus; in spring the orange blossom is intoxicating. Roadside stalls and packing operations sell fruit at its freshest, often picked the same day.

It's a reminder that the Riverland's beauty isn't only in its wetlands and cliffs but in the productive landscape that the river made possible. Combine it with a visit to Waikerie's riverfront and cliffs for a full picture of the district.
