Markaranka Flat

Sprawling private floodplain reserve near Waikerie, important for regent parrots and waterbirds.

Markaranka is a large floodplain on the river near Waikerie, important enough for its regent parrot breeding and waterbird habitat to be recognised well beyond the region. Much of the value lies in its scale — broad red gum flats that flood and dry on the river's terms.

It's the kind of country that explains why the Riverland punches so far above its weight for inland birds. The mosaic of permanent and ephemeral water keeps an enormous range of species fed and breeding.

Access is limited and conditions vary with the river, so it suits travellers who treat it as a place to observe quietly rather than a developed destination.
