Morgan's limestone cliffs stand high above the river, and from their tops the whole sweep of the old port lays out below — the long wharf, the moored craft, and the broad reach where the Murray makes its turn south.
This is one of the better vantage points in the lower Riverland for taking in the river's scale, and it's especially fine in the late afternoon when the cliffs opposite catch the sun and turn molten gold. The historic significance of the view adds weight to the scenery: this was the gateway through which much of inland South Australia's trade once passed.
The cliff faces are soft and undercut, so keep back from the crumbling edges. Pair the lookout with a wander along the wharf and through the Morgan Museum for the full story of the port.
