Upstream of Paringa, the Murtho reaches are some of the prettiest on the river — broad, quiet water hemmed by towering river red gums and backed by the wild Chowilla floodplain. Forest landings along this stretch make for memorable riverside camping.
These are simple, unserviced bush camps right on the bank, where you pitch among the gums with the river at your feet. They suit self-sufficient campers, paddlers and anglers happy to bring everything in and pack everything out. At night the bird calls give way to the splash of fish and the wind in the canopy.
The location puts you within reach of Headings Cliffs, the Chowilla anabranches and the long, slow river that makes this corner of the Riverland feel genuinely remote.
