Berri Estates, near Glossop, is one of the largest wineries in the southern hemisphere — a reminder that the Riverland is, by volume, the engine room of Australian wine. Vast tank farms and crush capacity here turn the region's irrigated grapes into a huge share of the wine the country drinks every day.
It's an industrial-scale operation rather than a boutique one, and that's exactly what makes it interesting: this is where the everyday Australian glass actually comes from. The scale is genuinely impressive.
Visitors are better served at the region's smaller cellar doors for tasting, but understanding Berri Estates' place in the picture is part of understanding the Riverland at all.
